February 14, 2011: The European Capitals of Biodiversity at the EU Committee of the Regions

The project coordinator of “European Capitals of Biodiversity”, Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH), was invited to present the project at the first meeting of the Commission for the Environment, Climate Change and Energy of the EU Committee of the Regions in 2011 on February 14. About 60 members of the Commission were informed about the project, achievements so far, participating and winning municipalities and future steps in a roundtable dedicated to “Follow up to Nagoya: promoting biodiversity in Europe’s local and regional authorities”. Together with representatives from EU Commission’s DG Environment, UNEP and IUCN the future roles of municipalities and regions for European biodiversity preservation were discussed. DUH pointed out the enormous potential of the municipalities in supporting the EU biodiversity strategy and the necessary steps on national and European level to enable them to unfold this potential.
